What is sea moss?

Chondrus crispus is a type of edible seaweed that is found in the coastal regions of the Atlantic, including those in Europe and North America. Like other types of seaweed, it’s rich in many nutrients which are difficult to get from normal food sources.

Carrageenan is a natural and vegan-friendly food additive that is commonly used by food manufacturers. It is able to thicken and emulsify foods while maintaining its all-natural properties. This is why it’s more common to find sea moss in supplement form rather than as a recipe ingredient.

Throughout history, sea moss has been variously called Irish Moss, Red Sea Moss and Sea Pearls. Sea Pearls tend to be red in colour but can also come in other colours such as green, brown and even yellow.

The Future Salt Substitute: Seaweed Granules
On

Health campaigns have been running for years all over the world, warning people about the dangers of consuming too much salt. A diet high in salt is linked to high blood pressure and heart problems. With so many people busy, people tend to eat what's quick and already prepared. As a result of this, studies show that 75% of a person's salt intake comes from eating pre-made and processed foods.

Researchers have found a viable natural salt substitute: seaweed granules.

Seaweed Granules

Sheffield Hallam University in the UK has been doing research on the possibility of using seaweed granules as a substitute to salt. The granules are produced by brown seaweed that is found in the cold waters of the UK and Norway. When the University checked the levels of microbes and other things that may pollute the seaweed, they concluded the seaweed was very clean.

Dr. Andrew Fairclough was the lead researcher on a project that is working jointly with Seagreans, a company interested in introducing seaweed granules into the everyday diet. Dr. Fairclough says, "This will change the food industry, undoubtedly."

Low on Sodium

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death throughout Europe and the United States. Health campaigns warn individuals that consuming too much salt can lead to heart disease, as well as hypertension.

One of the reasons too much salt can be devastating to a person is that sodium makes up 40% of its content. In comparison, seaweed granules only contain a 3.5% …

Can Wild Grass and Seaweed Solve the Energy Crisis?
On

Biomass may replace fossil fuels than you think. From wild grass, seaweed, and other biomass products, energy companies and governments are seeking alternatives to fossil fuels like oil, which are non-renewable. Biomass, on the other hand, would provide a renewable energy source, and relieve our dependence on non-renewable energy sources.

Fuel from Wild Grass?

The newest biomass material to be considered as an alternative fuel source is wild grass, specifically a wild grass called miscanthus. Miscanthus can be used to produce ethanol, a renewable biomass resource often used as a fuel or fuel additive.

Stanford University Professor Chris Somerville originated the idea of using miscanthus to create ethanol. His idea comes with some advantages.

One advantage to producing ethanol from miscanthus is that the entire plant can be used to make the alternative fuel. This could make a miscanthus a more fruitful alternative fuel than corn. When ethanol is made from corn, only the grains from the corn plant can be used, not the entire plant.

Another advantage is that miscanthus is more profitable than corn because it takes less area to grow the plant than others, like corn. Less acreage needed to produce the same amount of ethanol means more can be produced.

According to Somerville, miscanthus also requires less water to grow, so it uses fewer resources.

Annie Chun's Roasted Seaweed Snacks - Healthy Fit Fab Moms

The Annie Chun’s Roasted Seaweed Snacks are only for the brave! The Annie Chun’s Roasted Seaweed Snacks I reviewed were flavored in hot Wasabi. I love Wasabi in dips, but this product was a different story as it made me turn green!

I’ve read recently about the health benefits of eating seaweed. I never minded having powdered green algae in smoothies, but eating roasted seaweed as a snack was something new for me.

Although other people might enjoy the wafers or sheets of green seaweed, I was completely repulsed. I almost vomited after eating my first bite.

Even the hot wasabi flavor could not mask the nauseating smell and flavor of seaweed that I can only compare to swimming in the ocean and having the tide splash seaweed into your mouth so you had to choke and spit it out!

But if you are adventuresome and know you like seaweed, you might want to try the Wasabi flavor. I’m not used to Korean foods or seaweed so my review is purely from an American perspective.

Here are a few things I learned from my Annie Chun’s Roasted Seaweed Snacks Review.

No. 1: Annie Chun’s Roasted Seaweed Snacks calories: 10 sheets of the seaweed snack contains 30 calories.

No. 2: Annie Chun’s Roasted Seaweed Snacks fat: 2 grams of fat per serving.

No. 4: Annie Chun’s Roasted Seaweed Snacks nutritional facts: 1 gram protein, 25 percent vitamin A, 6 percent vitamin …
